I Need Writing Advice on Love Triangles!

So in an earlier post I mentioned love triangles and how hard they are to write effectively, and I just had the scary realization that I MIGHT BE WRITING A LOVE TRIANGLE.

But I don't mean for it to be a love triangle, at least not in the traditional girl-meets-two-guys-and-can't-choose-between-them sense.

I'm going to try to explain it to you readers/writers in the least confusing way possible and hopefully get some feedback on whether you think it could work, whether it's terribly cliche, or whether it's just trash and I should give up writing forever : )

So there is a Fey girl, a Fey guy, and a human guy. The Fey girl and the Fey guy have been best friends forever to the point that they basically know each other better than anyone else, share the same soul, etc. The human guy is a few years older (physically) than the two Fey. Human guy is initially the antagonist and Fey girl hates him for a whole slew of reasons. Eventually she realizes he's not that awful and they become tentative friends. Well Fey guy doesn't like that. He's used to having Fey girl all to himself and hates the idea of some pathetic human trying to take her away from him. So now we see the beginnings of a love triangle, EXCEPT WE DON'T.

The Fey girl and the human guy DO NOT LIKE EACH OTHER ROMANTICALLY. They're barely friends and the only person who thinks they have something between them is Fey guy. The triangle is all in his head and he basically spends the whole story trying to convince Fey girl that human guy is garbage. Fey girl and human guy are super confused by Fey guy's attitude since it's obvious to everyone but Fey guy that Fey girl is pretty much Fey guy's other half.

Is this a love triangle since it's relationship drama between three people? I didn't think so at first since the only one with issues is Fey guy, but now I'm not sure anymore. What do you think? Is this story salvageable? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I think it's fine because it's not your typical triangle. As a reader I'd probably expect it to be but then it never turns out that way so it's a surprise. As a reader I like surprises.
